regional waste management structure in the East and North-East Regions
The project area covers the north-eastern part of Republic of North Macedonia,
comprising two waste management regions. East and North – East Regions.

Locations
Republic of North Macedonia, a landlocked country on the Balkan Peninsula, spans 25,713 km² with a population of 1,836,713 (Census 2022) across 80 municipalities. It borders Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania. Its strategic location makes it a vital transit route in South-Eastern Europe. The terrain is 80% mountainous, peaking at Mount Korab (2,764 meters), with the lowest point (44 meters) at the Vardar River. The climate includes Mediterranean, continental, and mountainous types, resulting in hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters.
The project area is located in the North-eastern part of the Republic of North Macedonia, covering two administrative regions: East and North-East, along with the Municipality of Sveti Nikole, which statistically belongs to the Vardar Planning Region.
Specifically, the project area includes in total 18 Municipalities
East Region with 11 municipalities (14% of the country) and 8.5% of the
population
North-East Region with 6 Municipalities (9% of the country) and 8,5% of the
population
